Selecting Optional Features and Finish- Milk paint vs Stained Finish
Milk Paint Finish
In the tradition of Windsor chairmaking, most of my chairs are painted. I start with a stain, then follow that with several layers of non-toxic Milk Paint which are rubbed out with steel wool. The range of colors available and the technique of using Milk paints in this way comes much closer to the look of the paints and finishes of the 18th century than the use of modern paints. The milk paint is followed by a handrubbed oil or poly finish which deepens the color of the milk paint giving it a slight sheen. You can visit one of two websites to get an idea of the colors you want prior to ordering. I will work with you on getting the right color combination by providing real wood color samples which are finished as they wood be on your furniture. To see the range of paint colors visit www.oldecenturycolors.com or www.milkpaint.com.
Stained Finish
Many but not all chairs can be made in one of several varieties of wood and stained to highlight the natural grain of the woods which make up the chair. Not all woods have the best bending characteristics, so only certain varieties make quality bent backs for Windsors. That being said I have designed and made chairs and stools from curly cherry, ash, maple, tiger maple, walnut and flame birch and the results are often stunning. Before we proceed with your project, I will prepare several finished samples for you to choose from.
Option-Distressed Finish: add $50.00
An alternate, "distressed" finish is available which will give the chair the look of a fine antique Windsor at a fraction of the price of a real antique. This involves several layers ( dark green followed by black or red followed by black) of milk paint rubbed out, then carefully rubbed through the layers at the "wear points" to reveal the underlying layers. This can be done with a crackled effect as well.
Option-Added Crest: add $90.00
Available on both armchairs and sidechairs, the back spindles are longer extending through the bowed arc, mortised and pinned into a handcarved scrolled crest. Crest can be painted to match or stained and finished to match your dining table top. Also available in Tiger Maple, Cherry or Walnut.
